In this piece, Omar aspired for a combination of land, sea & botanical elements, as well as different South-East Asian / Australian influences. The crescent moon is famous in Islam, but he was trying to make the shape ambiguous, influenced by “Tongkonan” houses in Toraja, Sulawesi, the shape of which is simultaneously reminiscent of boats or buffalo horns. He also took a note from the floral patterns carved into Suluk prows, as a nod to his ancestors, but used Australian flannel flowers instead. He left the back of the sculpture uncarved, in the shape of the original wax, as somehow, by chance, it had melted into a pattern reminiscent of sand played by wavelets.
